Who doesn’t want to make money online in Kenya? Whether part time or full time, adding more dollars to your income flow every day/month is always excellent. But the question is, can you make money online in Kenya? The answer is YES! Thousands of freelancers here in Kenya make a decent living from working online. But there is a catch, earning money online is not a get rich scheme, you have to put in days/months/years of practice before you can start getting those dollars.
Many “freelancers” give up too soon after only trying for only a few days or months because when they joined freelancing, they were promised to earn thousand of dollars per hour/day after only doing very “simple tasks.” Sorry to break it down to you but most of the easiest way to make money earn online that you have heard are just sales pitches or scams, and you better run before these scammers get into your pocket.
In fact, there is no easy way to earn money online, and you have to put in hours of practice and learning before you can start seeing your online income streams begin to come in.When I was starting out my freelancing career, I wanted to make quick dollars online but was very disappointed after some months of a dry spell. But over the years I have been able to learn and earn money online in Kenya.Like any other freelancer my journey was not easy and after trying different methods, I finally settled on a few that works for me.Here I will share only the methods that I personally use or have used to earn money online in Kenya.
There are thousands of ways that you can use to earn money online but today let me give you those that have personally worked for me with real pics example.
1.Sell Your Products/Services Online
Ever since the idea of e-commerce came into existence in Kenya, selling products online has been on the rise.Good news is you don’t even need to own a website for you to start selling your products or services online. But before we get started here are some general tips when it comes to selling online if you want to succeed: take good pictures of your products, be honest and lastly do good business. The e-commerce platforms that I will recommend and I have personally used are Jumia and Rupu but you can also try OLX.
a). Sell Online Via Rupu
Rupu Kenya is a daily deals and discounts website that started operations in December 2010 based in Nairobi, Kenya. They provide online marketing resources for small and large businesses, helping them to reach the millions of Kenyan’s taking to the internet, in a cost effective manner.
My first income online was through Rupu, after I sold a couple of my custom designed Masai-inspired hoods —- in my other life I am a fashion designer at Snave Kollection. Do you have a product or service that you want to sell? It can be anything just visit Rupu’s website and see some of the products or services they sell.
Here is how Rupu Works: Each day Rupu offers exclusive offers on electronics, restaurants, travel, wellness, professional services and entertainment. All you need to do is to offer your product or service at a discounted price lets say like 30% off.You will tell Rupu for how long you wish the deal to run; let’s say for example a week or a month. After Rupu accepts you and you sign a contract with them, they will advertise your product/service via their website and interested clients will purchase your deal via them. Once the offer ends, clients who have bought your deal can redeem their coupons. You may choose to deliver your products to Rupu offices easy pick up by clients or deliver the orders personally if you don’t have a shop where they can pick the products.
Rupu charges a commission for every product they sell for you.But it is a win-win situation because you don’t have to pay for advertisement which is very expensive by the way. They will advertise your product for you for “free” to millions of their client base.
I have made good money selling via Rupu in the past, and when you visit their About Us page, you can see my testimonial.I will advise any newbie who wants to sell online in Kenya to try Rupu because it has worked out well for me.
b). Sell Online Via Jumia
I sell some of my products via Jumia too.Snave Kollection is the brainchild of Evans Saitoti, born out of passion and innovation that has been designed over the years. What began as a hobby turned into a business after many requests for my unique designs.
Jumia is like the biggest online supermarket in Kenya. They have almost all the products ranging from electronics to jewelry. If you have a product that you wish sold on Jumia, just contact their sales department. If your products are selected, you will be required to transport the products to their warehouse. The best thing about Jumia is that they will do photography for you free of charge.Once your products are on the Jumia site, you will receive your cash at the end of every month depending on the number of products that you have sold. However, Jumia charges a commission for every product that they sell on your behalf through their website. But the commission is small compared to the marketing they will do for you.
2.Earn Online Through Content Mills
According to Wikipedia a content farm (or content mill) is a company that employs large numbers of freelance writers to generate large amounts of textual content which is specifically designed to satisfy algorithms for maximal retrieval by automated search engines.
I think that freelance writing – both article writing and academic writing are the most popular methods that freelancers use to earn money online in Kenya. There are plenty of content mills out there, but the only ones that I have had success with them are Fiverr and Edusson (this an academic writing account). Other mills that you can try is Upwork; I have not had any success with up-work but I know its one of the best content mills in the world.Note: You will not become successful on every freelancing site that you sign up to, some work for you others don’t.
a). Earn Online Through Fiverr
You can sell almost any service on Fiverr for as little as $5.Are you good in web design, article writing, copy-writing, WordPress, Joomla or transcription? Just sign up and start bidding on projects that you have experience.Make sure you learn how to write good proposals so that you may win bids.Fiverr only allows you to send ten bids per day, so don’t just bid for the sake of bidding, bid on projects that have “higher” chances of you getting hired.
My first gig that I sold on Fiverr was on installing WordPress on cPanel for a client. It was a simple task, and it took me less than five minutes to get the job done. The trick here is to offer something you are really good at and sending catchy proposals.
b). Earn Online Through Edusson
Academic writing is simply doing homework for lazy students who have money but don’t have time to study or do their assignment.Once you choose to do, academic writing knows that you will be helping students cheat in their course work.Whether this is morally right is a topic of discussion for another day.
Though I don’t concentrate on academic writing anymore, you can earn real dollars working on sites like Edusson.I know friends who still make a fortune working on this sites. But the downside of academic writing is it is seasonal; you have many clients during high season, i.e. when students are in session, but when they are on recces dry spell takes effect.
3.Earn Online Through Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others, and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.
I am using Bluehost, Namecheap and Amazon associate program to earn money online via affiliate marketing. You will notice that here at Freelancer Hub there are several affiliate banners with links to products that I am promoting. In one instance I made $65 from Bluehost just by referring a client to sign up for hosting and domain registration via Bluehost.
4. Earn Online By Offering An Online Course
Are you good at article writing, academic writing, web design or transcription? Many newbies will pay you to learn what you are good at. Personally, I am good at web design, and I have started offering WordPress Training and Joomla Training I have enrolled a few students and so far so good.I can confidently say that offering an online course is a great way to earn money online and its fun to teach what you love.Visit my eLearning portal to learn about the courses I offer plus my pricing plans.
5.Earn Online By Offering Web Design Services
I have saved the last for the best.My main source of income online is through offering web design services. My web design agency is called Weblog Kenya, and you can visit my portfolio to see some of my past projects.
You can make real money if you are good with web design by just designing blogs or websites for a client. But like any freelancing career, this one too takes a lot of patience, handwork, search engine optimization and maybe referrals from friends or past clients.Once in a while offer free services and you never know who might be referred to you in future by that client you helped for free.
For example, a while back I offered to design blogs and websites for the first five interested people for free provided they had their domain and hosting (but kindly note the offer ended). Read More here: Free Professional Blog Installation & Customization Service For Awesome People!
Even though my service was free one client after I had finished designing his website, he was so happy that after I finished designing his site he went ahead and M-pesa me a tip.Another one referred a friend of hers after I had installed her blog for free and am currently designing her friend’s website but of cause at a fee.
These are my top ways that I use to make money online in Kenya.Note there are plenty of other ways that you can use to earn money online these are just those that has worked for me.I would love to know from you what other way do you use to make money online in the comment section below.
